Class two in the series on the Jewish encounter with modernity introduces Baruch Spinoza as a ‘converso of conscience.’ Unable to accept the narrow religious world of Judaism and unwilling to join Christianity, Spinoza’a experience of excommunication and philosophical enlightenment made him one of the progenitors of secular culture.
