5779 — Matot: “I’ll just sit in the dark!” – The Rejection of Reuven

Posted by Alex Israel on July 21, 2019
Topics: Torah, Pardes from Jerusalem, Bamidbar (Numbers), Matot

The Tribes of Reuven and Gad request to reside in Transjordan and not to enter the land of Canaan. Why? This podcast offers a novel approach that speaks of the pain of rejection and insult, misunderstandings and the failure of communication, and the need to ensure Jewish unity.

This week’s podcast is sponsored by Josh Tal in belated-honor of his father, Avi Handelman’s, birthday. Josh and Avi, who live on opposite coasts, each listen to the parsha podcast each week and then discuss it during their weekly Friday afternoon call. In this way they are continuing the family tradition of sharing divrei Torah at the Shabbat table that began when Josh was growing up. Josh wishes to thank his father for continuing to inspire his spirituality and learning, even though they are not always at the same Shabbat table anymore. Happy belated birthday, Avi, from Josh and your friends at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies.
