In this first installation in a new mini-series, the Maggid of Melbourne introduces two mitzvot that are performed twice every seven years: Biyur Maasrot – ensuring that all tithes have been distributed (Deuteronomy 14:28-29), and Viduy Maaser – the celebratory declaration that this has been done (Deuteronomy 26:12-15).
In the following installments we will explore why the Sages refer to the Biblically mandated declaration as a “confession”.
