Class Title – The Mourners’ Kaddish: Hasidic Remonstrations
Class taught by Levi Cooper
Class description: The quintessential Jewish prayer of resilience is the Mourners’ Kaddish – a publicly recited responsive passage that declares God’s greatness, while at the same time grieving the loss of a loved one. We will explore how modern writers, including S.Y. Agnon and Eliyahu Kitov, drew on Hasidic traditions about Kaddish in order to remonstrate before God or protest Kaddish practices.
