Meet the Panelists

Rabba Yaffa Epstein is the Director of the Wexner Heritage Program and oversees the development and curriculum for these dynamic lay leaders throughout the United States and North America who take part in the program. Yaffa has also served as a faculty member for the Wexner Heritage Program since 2015. Yaffa most recently served as the Director of Education, North America for the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies where she implemented a comprehensive educational vision for the advancement of the institute in North America.

Yaffa taught at Pardes for many years, and also studied as a student from 2003-2006 (Kollel Program and Summer) and 2013-2014 (Kollel).

Rabbi Marc Baker is Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston’s President and CEO, and has spent most of his life in Greater Boston’s Jewish community. An organizational leader and educator, Marc served as Head of School at Gann Academy, Greater Boston’s pluralistic Jewish high school, for 11 years prior to joining CJP. A native of Lynnfield, Marc was active in the JCC and at Camp Bauercrest throughout his childhood. Marc regularly speaks, writes, and teaches about Judaism, the Jewish community, and leadership. For the past several years he served as scholar-in-residence for CJP’s Cynthia and Leon Shulman Acharai Leadership Program. Marc attended Phillips Academy Andover and received his bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Yale University. He lives in Brookline with his wife, Jill, and their four children.

Marc spent four years at Pardes (1997-2000) as the recipient of a Dorot Fellowship, a Fellow and as a pioneer of the Pardes Educators Program (2000-2002).

Alicia Jo Rabins is a writer, musician, composer, performer, and Torah teacher. She creates multi-genre works of experimental beauty that explore the intersection of ancient wisdom texts with everyday life. Rabins’ first collection of poetry, Divinity School, won the 2015 APR/Honickman First Book Prize and was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. Her second collection, Fruit Geode, was published in October 2018 by Augury Books/Brooklyn Arts Press. As a musician and performer, Rabins is the creator and performer of Girls in Trouble, an indie-folk song cycle about the complicated lives of Biblical women with accompanying curriculum, and A Kaddish for Bernie Madoff, a chamber-rock opera about the intersection of finance and spirituality which is currently being made into an independent feature film.

Alicia studied at Pardes from 1998-2000 (Year) and was a Fellow in her second year at Pardes.

Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson works at the intersection of politics and spirituality. He is the author of eight books and over three hundred articles on religion, sexuality, law, and contemplative practice. He is a columnist for The Daily Beast, an editor at the Ten Percent Happier meditation platform, and an affiliated assistant professor at Chicago Theological Seminary. Jay is a nondenominational rabbi and teaches meditation in a Theravadan Buddhist lineage. He holds a Ph.D from Hebrew University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and nondenominational rabbinic ordination.

Jay studied at Pardes in 1993 as the recipient of a Dorot Fellowship and in 1994 (Summer).

Rabbi Zvi Hirschfield will be moderating the conversation.
Zvi teaches Talmud, Halakha and Jewish Thought at Pardes. In addition, Zvi is a faculty member of the Pardes Center for Jewish Educators and has been training and mentoring Jewish Educators for over ten years in Tefilah in educational settings, critical issues in modern Jewish thought, and Israel education. Zvi also travels around the world teaching and representing Pardes, in North America and Europe.
